Born during my artist residency in North Iceland's Akureyri Botanical Garden in 2022, the Tranquility series unfolds as a tender elegy to fleeting beauty amid eternal silence. Each crisp morning and afternoon, I walked to Akureyri Botanical Garden to immerse myself in its resilient, breathtaking flora, 430 native Icelandic species thriving alongside 6,600 hardy exotics in the subarctic microclimate.
My daily ritual became a slow walk along the paths: filming, photographing the garden's quiet tenacity, and gathering fallen blue poppy petals, carrying them like sacred offerings back to my studio. There, I photographed them that very day and in the lingering quiet of the days after, chronicling their slow metamorphosis: edges curling like secrets, hues bleeding into shadow, a silent saga of resilience etched in decay against the demanding climate of northern Iceland.
Tranquility echoes the meditative stillness of the Blue Zone series' deep blue dreams and Retreating’s glacial whispers, bodies of work that invite the viewer to linger inside nature’s quiet strength. Here, the blue poppies step forward as humble narrators of this northern garden, their slow transformation a whispered meditation where fragility pairs with defiance, asking you to dwell within each frame’s calm and trace your own resilience woven through bloom’s courageous fading.
